Graphites (Black Lead)
Graphites is one of the most important skin remedies in my practice. Prepared from the purest form of black lead — a modification of carbon containing traces of iron — this mineral remedy has an extraordinarily deep action on the skin, mucous membranes, and glandular system. When I see a patient with cracked, oozing skin eruptions that discharge a characteristic sticky, honey-like fluid, Graphites is often the first remedy I consider.

Key Indications
The following keynote symptoms point strongly toward Graphites in clinical practice:
- Moist, crusty eruptions oozing a sticky, honey-like discharge — This is the single most characteristic skin symptom. The exudation is glutinous, yellow, and transparent, forming thick crusts underneath which the skin remains raw and weeping.
- Cracks and fissures at muco-cutaneous junctions — The skin splits at the corners of the mouth, behind the ears, between the toes, at the nostrils, anus, and nipples. These fissures bleed easily and heal poorly.
- Unhealthy skin where every minor injury suppurates — Even small cuts or scratches tend to fester. Old scars may reopen and ulcerate. There is a marked tendency toward keloid formation.
- Alternating digestive and skin symptoms — I find this pattern highly characteristic. When a patient's eczema improves, digestive complaints such as bloating, constipation, or gastric pain appear, and vice versa.
- Thick, rough, deformed nails — The nails are brittle, crumbling, and tend to split down the middle. Fungal infections of the nails are common.
Clinical Uses in Skin Conditions
Graphites acts deeply on the skin, producing eruptions that are predominantly eczematous and herpetic in character. In my skin-focused practice, I reach for this remedy in several key scenarios.
Eczema with weeping eruptions. Graphites is among the first remedies I consider for eczema that presents with moist, crusty patches oozing a characteristic sticky, honey-like fluid. The eruptions favor the flexures — behind the ears, in the bends of elbows and knees, the groin, and between fingers and toes. The skin beneath the crusts is raw, red, and excoriated. Itching is intense and worse from the warmth of the bed at night. Patients often report that scratching initially feels satisfying but quickly leads to burning and further weeping. In my experience, the eczema of Graphites patients frequently alternates with digestive complaints — a pattern that strongly confirms the remedy.
Psoriasis with deep fissures. While Sulphur and Arsenicum Album are more commonly considered first-line remedies for psoriasis, Graphites covers a specific presentation: dry, rough, cracked skin with deep painful fissures, particularly on the hands, fingertips, and around joints. The skin is thickened and indurated. Patients who develop psoriatic patches in old scars or at sites of previous skin injury respond particularly well. The characteristic modality of worse from warmth of the bed helps confirm the prescription.
Skin fissures and cracks. Graphites has a remarkable affinity for the places where skin meets mucous membrane. I prescribe it frequently for chronic fissures at the corners of the mouth, behind the ears, in the nostrils, around the anus, and at the nipples. The fissures are deep, bleed easily, and discharge that distinctive glutinous fluid. Petroleum shares this tendency toward fissuring, but in Petroleum the cracks are typically deeper and worse in winter, while Graphites fissures ooze more freely and favor the folds of skin.
Old scars and keloids. Graphites has a well-documented ability to promote the absorption of scar tissue. I consider it when old scars become painful, indurated, or show signs of reactivation. The remedy is particularly indicated when eruptions or even more serious pathology develops at the site of old scars.

Relationships
Complementary: Argentum Nitricum follows well in gastric derangements. Causticum, Hepar Sulph, Lycopodium, Arsenicum, and Tuberculinum are also complementary.
Compare: Petroleum is the closest analogue for cracked, fissured skin, but Petroleum is typically worse in winter with deeper cracks, while Graphites features more glutinous discharge. Carbo Vegetabilis and Carbo Animalis share the carbon relationship. Nitric Acid covers fissures at orifices with splinter-like pains. Silica complements Graphites in suppurating skin conditions.
Antidoted by: Aconitum, Arsenicum, Nux Vomica.
It follows well: Calcarea, Lycopodium, Pulsatilla, Sepia, Sulphur.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I distinguish Graphites eczema from Sulphur eczema?
Both are major eczema remedies, but the presentations differ notably. Graphites eczema features a sticky, honey-like discharge beneath crusts, favors the folds and flexures, and the patient is typically stout, chilly, and constipated. Sulphur eczema tends to be drier, intensely burning and itching, worse from bathing and warmth, and the patient is generally warm-blooded with a tendency to stand rather than sit.
What potency is typically used for chronic skin conditions?
For chronic eczema and psoriasis with the Graphites picture, I typically begin with 30C taken twice weekly, observing the response over several weeks. In deeply entrenched cases with marked constitutional features — the stout, chilly, constipated patient with longstanding skin complaints — I may move to 200C given less frequently. The key principle is to allow sufficient time between doses for the remedy to act, as skin conditions often require patience.
Can Graphites help with nail problems?
Graphites has a strong affinity for the nails. It is indicated when nails are thick, rough, deformed, brittle, and crumbling. They may crack and split down the middle, or become ingrown. Fungal infections that distort the nail plate are also within its scope. In my practice, I often see nail involvement alongside the characteristic skin eruptions, which confirms the systemic nature of the Graphites state.
