Kali Sulphuricum — Homeopathic Remedy Profile
Kali sulphuricum is a mineral remedy prepared from potassium sulphate by trituration. Introduced by Schüssler as one of the twelve tissue salts, it moves through the mucous membranes and the skin, wherever discharges turn yellow and slimy and wherever the epidermis peels. The clinical field runs from sinus catarrh and rattling bronchitis to psoriasis, dandruff and wandering rheumatism. The modalities point sharply at Pulsatilla: worse in warm rooms, better in cool open air.

Source and Preparation
Potassium sulphate, prepared by trituration. Schüssler placed it in reciprocal action with iron, describing it as the carrier by which inhaled oxygen reaches the cells that contain iron. A deficiency, he wrote, produces heaviness, weariness, vertigo, chilliness, palpitations, anxiety, sadness, toothache, headache and pain in the limbs.
Two prescribing registers apply to the same substance. The Schüssler biochemic route uses low decimals — 3X to 6X — as a material tissue supply. Murphy records an asthma case in the older literature cured with Kali-s. 3X, five grains every hour through the attack: much rattling in the chest, thick yellow expectoration, labored breathing that made talking almost impossible. Classical homeopathic prescribing uses 30C and upward, where no molecule of the salt remains and what acts is the dynamic preparation, met against the totality of the case. Older texts move between the two without always naming the switch, and a reader who does not track the register will read one dose regime as if it were the other.
The Essence of Kali Sulphuricum
The self-expression of the organism, wherever this remedy is called for, is yellow and it flakes. Mucous membrane meets outside air and produces bland yellow slime, thick or thin, sometimes greenish, always profuse. Skin ages through a cycle and the top layer peels: dandruff moist and sticky, psoriasis in whitish scales over red smooth skin beneath, eczema papular and itching, epithelium sloughing off after erysipelas. Underneath sits a torpid organism that reacts slowly, warms too readily, and drops into a lack of reaction in the later stages of inflammation where Pulsatilla has begun the work but not completed it.
The person is hurried. Timid, easily frightened, weeps without warning. Cannot bear a warm room. Anxiety in the evening lifts the moment they step outdoors. What Boericke and Clarke both mark, and what the practitioner sees at the door, is the intolerance of heat and the seeking of open air.
Clinical Portrait
Mind and Temperament
Hurried, irritable, timid. Frightened at trifles. Anxiety collects in the evening and lifts in cool open air. A characteristic claustrophobia carries a fear of suffocation with it, and heated crowded rooms bring both on. Desires and then rejects things, asks and pushes away, wants to lie down and then cannot bear lying so must walk for relief. Fear of falling, fear of losing their reason. Mood changes without cause and weeping is easy. Mental exertion aggravates; noise aggravates; consolation aggravates. Dreams are vivid and violent, of ghosts, of death, of robbers and murder, with struggling in sleep.
Head and Vertigo
Rheumatic headache beginning in the evening, worse in a heated room, better in cool open air. Headache during menses. Great pain on moving the head from side to side or backwards. The vertigo has a distinct signature: dreadful on rising from lying, on standing from sitting, on looking upwards, always with a fear of falling.
Nose, Sinuses and Ears
The commonest daily indication. Colds discharge yellow slimy matter, thick or thin, sometimes alternating watery and thick. Sinusitis produces thick yellow or greenish discharge; the nose obstructs; smell and taste are lost, as they are lost under Natrum muriaticum with a different modality picture. Swelling of the naso-pharyngeal mucous membrane persists after adenoid removal.
The ear picture is Eustachian catarrh with deafness. Stinking or brown offensive otorrhea. Discharge of yellow matter, sometimes with polyps. Watery, sticky and thin when the process is early; thick yellow when established. Recurring earaches where Pulsatilla has been given and has stopped short of cure often clear completely under Kali-s.
Chest, Throat and Cough
Every cold settles in the larynx. Croupy hoarseness. Sore throat and hoarseness after catching a chill. The bronchial picture is the second face of the remedy: rattling of mucus in the lungs, yellow slimy expectoration coughed up with difficulty, coarse rales, wheezing. Post-influenza cough, especially in children, when the acute has passed and the residual bronchial catarrh persists. Croupy cough. Pneumonia with wheezing.
Where Antimonium tartaricum covers the drowning quality of a chest full of mucus the patient cannot expel, Kali-s. steps in when the rattle continues and the discharge is distinctly yellow and slimy. The asthma case Murphy quotes from Douglass — five grains of the 3X every hour, cured through the attack — is the model for the intercurrent use of Kali-s. in a rattling chest that will not clear.
Digestion
Tongue coated yellow and slimy, with an insipid pappy taste. Loss of taste and smell. Burning thirst is one of the few places the picture departs from Pulsatilla. Pressure and fullness in the stomach as if a heavy load. Faintness in the stomach with a befogged head. Catarrh of stomach and duodenum. Nausea and vomiting. Aversion to eggs, and worse from them.
Colicky pains with the abdomen cold to the touch. Distension after eating. In whooping cough the abdomen becomes hard and ascitic. Constipation with hemorrhoids. Stools large like sheep's dung, or thin and offensive, sometimes light-colored and bilious. Yellow slimy diarrhea.
Skin
Skin complaints often bring practitioners to this remedy for the first time. Psoriasis in whitish scales over smooth red skin beneath, the eruption papular, oval, annular, with paler centres — the cured case Murphy quotes from Hansen began on the right leg, moved to the left elbow and left leg, and cleared on the guiding symptom great desquamation of the epidermis. Eczema burning and itching, papular, worse from heat. Dandruff yellow, moist and sticky, distinguishing it from the dry white flake that calls for other prescriptions. Scaldhead. Bald spots after gonorrhea. Yellow scales. Skin dry and itching, worse from heat. Ringworm of the scalp or beard with abundant scales. Nettle-rash. Intertrigo.
Ulcers ooze thin yellow water. Scabs form with yellow pus. Suppressed rash of measles or other eruptive diseases, with harsh and dry skin, calls for the remedy classically to bring the eruption back to the surface. Formation of new epithelium is facilitated; epithelioma is on the clinical list, notably of the lip. The remedy antidotes Rhus poisoning.
Limbs and Rheumatism
Pains that wander, joint to joint, worse heat and evening, better cold weather or cold applications. Pain in the back and limbs, worse in a warm room. Arthritic nodes. Cold hands and feet. A scaly eruption on the arms is oddly better from hot water; the joint pains are not. Diseased nails, with interrupted growth.
Female
Menses late and scanty, with a feeling of weight in the abdomen. Headache during menses. Metrorrhagia. Yellowish, watery leukorrhea.
Modalities
Worse:
- warm room, warm wraps, warm weather, heated air
- evening
- noise; consolation
- mental exertion
- hot applications and hot baths for the joints
- eggs
Better:
- cool open air
- walking in the open
- discharge of flatus
- fasting
- cold applications for rheumatic pains
The modality that carries the case is the intolerance of heat. Kali-s. cannot stand warm rooms or other forms of heat, and fresh air relieves anxiety, headache, toothache and cough. The similarity to Pulsatilla is close enough that Kali-s. often completes a Pulsatilla case where discharges remain yellow, the rattle stays behind in the chest, or the eruption has not fully desquamated.
Relationships
Antidote to Rhus poisoning.
Compare Pulsatilla first: same aversion to heat, same bland yellow catarrh, same weeping and mood change, but Pulsatilla is thirstless where Kali-s. burns with thirst. Compare Kali bichromicum for the tough, stringy yellow discharge; where Kali-bi's mucus ropes, Kali-s.'s flows. Compare Natrum muriaticum for loss of taste and smell with catarrh. Compare Hydrastis in dyspepsia and epithelioma with the same yellow ear discharge. Compare Antimonium tartaricum where rattling of mucus in the chest dominates and the patient cannot expel.
Compatible with Calcarea carb, Hepar sulphuris, Pulsatilla, Rhus tox, Sepia, Silica and Sulphur. The wide compatibility reflects the remedy's place as a completing intercurrent rather than a solitary polychrest.
Clinical Uses
Sinusitis and chronic catarrh
Thick yellow or green sinus discharge, obstruction, loss of smell and taste. Swelling of the naso-pharyngeal mucous membrane after adenoidectomy. Colds that alternate watery and thick yellow. Worse warm room, better cool air.
Bronchitis, asthma and post-viral cough
Rattling mucus that will not come up, yellow slimy expectoration, coarse rales, wheezing. Post-influenza cough in children when the acute has passed and the rattle stays. Croupy hoarseness. This is the picture where Pulsatilla has done part of the work, or where Antimonium tartaricum's drowning quality has resolved but the mucus remains yellow.
Dandruff, psoriasis and eczema
Yellow, moist, sticky dandruff — the differentiating feature from dry flaking scalps. Psoriasis with whitish scales over smooth red skin. Papular eczema, burning and itching, worse from heat. Ringworm of the scalp with abundant scales. Skin conditions in which the guiding thread is desquamation.
Ear complaints
Eustachian deafness with catarrh. Otorrhea, offensive, yellow, sometimes with polyps.
Wandering rheumatism
Pains that shift joint to joint, worse heat, better cool applications. Arthritic nodes. The rheumatic patient who feels worse from hot baths presents a straightforward differential against remedies whose pains warm out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kali sulphuricum the same as the Schüssler tissue salt Kali sulph?
The substance is the same. The prescribing register differs. Schüssler's biochemic method uses low trituration, typically 3X to 6X, as a material tissue supply, and Murphy's quoted asthma case ran on Kali-s. 3X, five grains hourly. Classical homeopathic prescribing uses 30C and upward, where no molecule of the salt remains and the remedy acts as a dynamic preparation on the totality of the case. Older sources move between the two, so a reader has to check which register the author is in.
How does Kali sulphuricum differ from Pulsatilla? Both are worse in warm rooms and better in cool open air, both produce bland yellow discharges, both weep easily. Pulsatilla is thirstless; Kali sulphuricum has burning thirst. Kali-s. often completes a Pulsatilla case in which discharges remain yellow, the chest rattle persists, or the eruption has not fully desquamated. Boericke and Clarke both note the relation.
What makes the dandruff of Kali sulphuricum recognizable? Yellow, moist and sticky. The scalp holds an oily, slightly waxen scale that mats the hair rather than falling loose. Where the dandruff is dry and white, other remedies apply.
Can Kali sulphuricum be used for post-viral cough in children? The classical indication is post-influenza cough, especially in children, with yellow slimy expectoration and rattling mucus that comes up with difficulty. The picture appears when the acute stage has passed and the residual bronchial catarrh persists. Prescribing follows the totality: worse warm room, better open air, thirst present, discharges yellow.
